"Magical Mystery Tour" was released in the US on November 27, 1967, as an album compiled by American Capitol. In the UK, it was released on December 8, 1967, as a soundtrack album for the TV movie of the same name, with a 6-song EP set of two discs. Although the film itself was not well-received, in the UK charts, it appeared in the single chart, which was unusual for an EP, in Music Week magazine, and achieved a peak position of No. 2, following the No. 1 single "Hello, Goodbye." The album, which was popular as an import from the US, also reached a peak of No. 31 on the UK album chart. In the US, even without a TV broadcast, it topped the Billboard album chart for 6 consecutive weeks and ranked 8th in the 1967 annual ranking. It also topped Cash Box for 8 consecutive weeks, and has sold over 5 million copies in the US alone.
