One of them had a cardboard insert, but it is not necessary. They can stand on their own if you set them down properly. The inside is hollow with some kind of batting/felt that the feathers are attached to. I can share pics if that is helpful.
Slightly musty - use a deodorizing scent you like; I wouldn't want to use the wrong scent and the new owner not like it
