1950s Vintage Venetian Micro Mosaic Mandolin Brooch on Brass
A charming souvenir of the Grand Tours of the mid-century period. Probably Venetian, the piece is mandolin shaped
and set with stylised intricate floral motifs in white,
with red and blue details
The base of the brooch is brass
and has a good strong pin and a safety catch.
The mandolin measures 1 3/4” by 5/8” and weighs 7 grams
There are several types of Italian mosaics: Venetian, Roman and Florentine.
In Venetian designs, the artisans used a wide variety of shapes in the glass tiles to form the design, usually set on a brass ground.
In the Roman design very tiny pieces of colored glass, call tesserae, were pieced together to form a picture, and were held in place with cement in a glass or stone background.
In the Florentine design pietra dura (literally, “hard stone”) were cut, shaped and fitted
